Why does it take so long for a cheque to clear?

There’s a 2-4-6 timescale when it comes to cheques – the Cheque and Credit Clearing Company (CCC) set a maximum time limit of two, four or six working days for each stage after you pay your cheque in.

Certain banks may allow you to withdraw against a cheque earlier than this, however your cheque could still bounce, so they’d have to take the money out of the balance you have in your account.

We can’t do this, as it could place you into a negative balance. thinkmoney also have to add an extra day to get the cheque from the Post Office® and into the clearance cycle, which is why it takes a little longer than the usual 6 days.
