5 of the best budget smartphones available on pay as you go
Published 21 September 2015 by Emily Bancroft
You don’t need to spend more than £500 on an iPhone 6s – you can get a decent smartphone on a budget.
It can seem like everyone has a smartphone nowadays. You only have to take a trip on a bus or train to see how many people are tapping away on the newest iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or Sony Xperia model. If you’re living on a tight budget, you might not be able to afford a high-end phone but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get a decent smartphone. Buying a basic smartphone for a lower price means you’ll be able to get it on a pay as you go deal, so you don’t have to be tied into paying for a contract every month.
While budget smartphones won’t take the best photos or have the clearest screen, they’re perfectly fine if you just want to use them to make calls, send texts and emails and play on a few apps. Take a look at our pick of some of the best smartphones for under £100*:
1) Motorola Moto E 2
Price: £99 from Tesco Mobile
Info: with a 4.5 inch screen and a 5-megapixel rear camera, the Motorola Moto E 2 is a great Android smartphone for those on a budget. It comes with 4G too and with a battery life of over 48 hours, you’ll struggle to find a better smartphone at this price.
2) EE Rook
Price: £39 plus a minimum £10 top-up (or £49 if you’re not already an EE customer) from EE
Info: one of the cheapest smartphones on the market, this Android offering from EE doesn’t fare too badly in terms of technology either. At just 4 inches, the screen is a little small and difficult to use from some angles but it’s got a front and rear camera and costs less than some feature phones, so it’s a winner if you’re looking to save.
3) Microsoft Lumia 435
Price: £39.99 plus a minimum £10 top-up from EE
Info: if you’d rather have a Windows Phone, the Microsoft Lumia 435 is a good deal. It’s a sturdy and simple smartphone and you can change the coloured covers if you fancy a different look. Not all apps are available on Windows Phone, though you’ll still be able to get most of the popular apps like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
4) Huawei Honor Holly
Price: £89.99 from Amazon
Info: not the cheapest on the list, the Huawei Honor Holly is a more high-end Android smartphone if you’re looking for more impressive specifications. An 8-megapixel rear camera, 16GB of storage and a 5.0" 720P screen – all great for tech addicts on a tight budget.
5) Vodafone Smart Prime 6
Price: £70 from Vodafone
Info: the Vodafone Smart Prime 6 is a pretty good quality smartphone for its price, with a 5 inch HD screen and an 8-megapixel camera to brag about. The quad-core processor means that the phone has great reactions and you’ll be able to run any apps or play games without it lagging.
