It’s not too late to treat the woman in your life this Christmas
Any guy who looked at his calendar and suddenly realised that there’s only a week to go before Christmas and he hasn’t bought his wife or girlfriend a gift yet will agree it’s a mistake he’ll only make once. Rushing around the shops on Christmas Eve when the shelves are bare and what’s left costs a fortune is an experience you don’t want to repeat.
However, if you are in danger of finding yourself in exactly that position this year, we’re here to help. Take a look at our suggestions for some great gifts to give your other half – whatever budget you’re working with. These prices were correct at the time of writing (16/12/13), but may have since changed or items been removed by the retailer. Prices may or may not include VAT and postage and packaging.
Stocking fillers (£10 or less)
No matter how old you are, you never grow out of the excitement that comes with opening your stocking on Christmas morning. So, your partner will certainly appreciate the effort you have gone to if you present her with a stocking overflowing with lots of small presents – after all, they do say the best things come in small packages.
That’s certainly the case with these luxurious hot chocolates by Prestat. There are several flavours to choose from, like dark chocolate and zesty orange, and – even better – they are currently on offer at three for two, or £6.50 each.
If your wife or girlfriend hardly ever gets time to relax and unwind, some smellies she can pamper herself with are sure to be appreciated. Lush has plenty of festive-themed products available at prices to suit all budgets.
To really help the lady in your life relax after a stressful day at the office or looking after the kids – or both! – you could pop a Genie Head Massager in her stocking. The massager has been specially designed to ensure that all the acupuncture points in the neck, temples and scalp are stimulated, leaving her in a state of bliss. All that and it’s available for just £3.99 at Lucy Rose – what a bargain!
Bags are one of the most useful – and stylish – gifts a woman can receive. You may not have enough to splash out on a quilted Chanel number, but you can still give her something that makes a statement and will be the envy of all her friends. For instance, at Not On The High Street you can get a tote bag personalised with your wife or girlfriend’s name and initial for just £9.50 – plus free gift wrap! Order now and the maker, Snapdragon, claims it will be delivered to you by December 24th – perfect if you’ve left your shopping until the last minute. For something a little more glam, River Island is currently offering a discount on several of its handbags, like this pink quilted Chanel-style number, down from £15 to £7.
If you’re getting the woman in your life a new bag, you may as well splash out on a new purse too. This glitzy owl purse from Accessorize is almost too fancy to be kept out of sight in a bag, and is available for £9.
Finally, Christmas means there’s a new year on the way so it’s the perfect time to give your partner a calendar or diary. You could just get a calendar featuring her favourite band, but for something a little more special head to Photobox where you can choose one that’s personalised with pictures of your choice. There are numerous sizes and styles of calendar and diary available and most start at under £10. You’d better hurry if you want it in time for Christmas – but you could simply save it as a gift to welcome in the new year with.
Under the tree (£100 or less)
The gift you place under the tree for your wife or girlfriend to open on Christmas Day is your chance to show her how much you really appreciate her – so make sure it’s more imaginative than an iron (unless that’s what she truly craves). You don’t have to spend a fortune to show her how much you care, though.
There can be very few women who don’t appreciate getting flowers, so why not present your partner with some on Christmas Day as a special surprise? The bunches from Bloom & Wild start at £13.95 with free delivery, and are sent in a flat box that fits through your letterbox, so you don’t have to worry about hiding a huge bouquet until the big day – although you should put them in some water!
Given the time of year, hats and scarves are sure to be appreciated. A knitted bobble hat, like this £14 beanie from Topshop, is a classic – but if your partner fancies herself as something of a fashionista why not surprise her with this faux fur Cossack (£22 from TopShop)? This style is very on-trend this winter. If you’re planning to buy a scarf, a useful tip is to get one she can wear from winter into spring, like this bold floral design from Next. Best of all, it’s a bargain at £10.
Getting a spare minute to sit and read is a true luxury, so give your partner a book she can lose herself in on Boxing Day. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt is a sweeping suspense thriller set in New York – and we found the hardback version on sale at Asda for just £10. For something a little lighter, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy by Helen Fielding could be the perfect choice. This is the long-awaited follow-up to Bridget Jones’s Diary and meets a Bridget adapting to parenthood and middle age. We found the hardback edition for £7.59 at Amazon.
The Christmas break is the perfect time to catch up on the TV shows people have been talking about all year but that you simply haven’t had time to watch. Downton Abbey is certainly easy viewing, and even if your partner doesn’t lose herself in the historical melodrama, she can enjoy all the vintage fashion. Head to Amazon where you can buy Series 1 to 3 for £23.00. For something more contemporary, treat her to the award-winning New York-based sitcom Girls. Season one is available from Tesco for £12.75.
Jewellery is one of the most romantic gifts you can give the lady in your life and Pandora is a designer that’s become immensely popular in the last couple of years. A silver bracelet will set you back £49, or you could get her a leather one for £45. You can then pick out a few charms, which range from £15 to more than £500 – so there’s certainly something for every budget!
Gifts to remember
As we said, it’s hard to beat jewellery when it comes to romantic gifts as it’s something she can cherish forever. If it comes in a little blue box wrapped in a white ribbon – even better. Ever since Audrey Hepburn chose to eat her morning pastry there in Breakfast At Tiffany’s, the jeweller of the same name has been a hit across the world. Admittedly their prices are steep, but it is possible to buy something for under £100 – well, nearly. This pretty ‘Return to Tiffany’s’ heart necklace is £105 so will stretch your budget a little, but it will never go out of style.
However, perhaps the most romantic gift you can give your girl on Christmas Day is one you can share. That’s what makes experience days a really worthwhile investment as it’s something to look forward to once the turkey is finished and the tree has come down – and it’s something the two of you can do together.
At Red Letter Days, you can get tickets for an afternoon tea for two for just £26 – down from £35. There’s a choice of locations and you’ll be able to tuck into platefuls of delicious sandwiches, cakes and scones with cream – yum!
Red Letter Days is also offering a decadent day of pampering for two at Bannatyne Health Clubs for just £50 – which is a 53% saving. You and your partner – if it’s you she chooses to bring along! – will spend the whole day at one of your choice of 29 health clubs across the country, where you’ll have the freedom to use the swimming pool, gym, Jacuzzi and steam room, before being treated to a massage. It’s hard to think of a better way to relax and unwind once the whirlwind of Christmas is over.
