Christmas gift guide for women
Published 15 December 2014
From simple stocking fillers to more unusual gifts for under the tree, our 2014 Christmas presents guide for women will make sure you’re sorted on time.
If you haven’t started your Christmas shopping yet, you may be starting to panic about how much there is to do. Arguably the most important presents you have to buy are for your wife or girlfriend, and it can be tricky if you’re stumped for gift ideas. So to help you with buying gifts for your number one woman, we’ve pulled together some of the most reliable present ideas for her for Christmas 2014, as well as a few you might not have thought of.
Stocking fillers (£10 or less):
It’s pretty much fact that anyone – regardless of gender – will appreciate chocolate as a little gift for Christmas. For something a bit more interesting than a selection box, check out these chocolate ‘mince pies’ from Hotel Chocolat. A lot of their stuff can be fairly pricey, but this pack of six salted caramel and chocolate cup mince pie alternatives is only £7, making it a perfect stocking filler. If you prefer to drink your chocolate rather than eat it, Whittards has a decadent option. The Dreamtime Hot Chocolate is made up of creamy malted chocolate, camomile and honey.
Beauty gifts can make great stocking fillers, but unless you know your wife or girlfriend’s preferred make-up brand or colour, you might be best staying away from picking her a new lipstick or eye shadow. Instead, why not try this Burt’s Bees Essential Collection gift set for £9.99? It has a tube of beeswax lip balm, a little pot of lemon butter cuticle cream and a tube of shea butter hand cream so your partner can treat her hands to spa-quality pampering every day.
For a food-loving lady, take a look at the Little Leon: Fast Suppers recipe book on Amazon. Written by the London-based restaurant chain of the same name, this book is part of the Leon Minis series, all of which are available for between £5.20 and £5.99. We’ve picked this one because it’s a great little book to have in when you want to make something quick and easy for dinner; covering burgers, pasta dishes, desserts, and everything in between.
Buying jewellery for your lady can be expensive but if you don’t want to break the bank, there are a great range of accessories in high street stores. There are so many to choose from so make sure you take your wife or girlfriend’s tastes in jewellery into account when you’re picking what to buy for her, but we’ve gone for this green stone cocktail ring from Topshop. With its blue and turquoise colour scheme and elegant decoration of rhinestones, it will make a great addition to a Christmas outfit – and it’s unusual to find bling like this for just £10!
If you want to buy a CD for the lady in your life, Paloma Faith’s album A Perfect Contradiction is available on Amazon for £6.91. If your girl is a fan of old-school soul singers like Etta James and Macy Gray, she might be interested in Paloma’s powerhouse vocals and retro tunes. For fans of acoustic guitar music, you can pick up George Ezra’s Wanted on Voyage for just £8. With his baby face, baritone vocals, and American folk-style songs, George is a mums’ favourite and his debut album has been making waves this year. You can also get Sam Smith’s album In The Lonely Hour at a stocking filler price of just £9.
Christmas is a great time to sit back and watch some holiday-themed telly. When you’ve had enough of the festive films and TV show reruns, pop on this DVD of The Fault In Our Stars for £10 from Amazon. The story of two young cancer patients who meet and fall in love, this film is sure to have an impact on you and your wife or girlfriend. Just don’t forget the tissues, as it’s a real weepy.
Under the tree (£100 or less):
Moving on to bigger presents, the gifts you get for your wife or girlfriend to open under the tree are more important as they’re how you’ll show her just how well you know her. You don’t have to break the bank to impress your lady though, as we’ve found a selection of impressive gifts for under £100.
If your girl is a comedy fan, Miranda Hart’s new live DVD is available from Amazon for £9.99. For fans of her TV show, Miranda’s brand of silly slapstick comedy will strike a chord with the young at heart and is very easy to relate to. If you’re looking for a TV show to get into, pick up the first two series of BBC gangster drama Peaky Blinders for just £24.99 for a gritty story about a Birmingham gang set in 1919.
For a more traditional present, perfume always goes down well for beauty-loving girls – just as long as you splash out a bit for something classy. Marc Jacobs’ newest fragrance Daisy Dream is available in a gift set with a 50ml bottle, body lotion and shower gel for the full experience. It’s on offer for £47 at Boots now.
Sticking with the daisy theme, this little black clutch bag from Accessorize will suit a girly girl and comes with a cross body strap to make it easier to carry. At just £19, it will make a great addition to your wife or girlfriend’s winter wardrobe. For a more everyday bag, Accessorize also have this stylish burgundy handbag for £32. The red colour is ideal for winter but it’s also available in black or cream, so you’ll be able to find something to suit the lady in your life’s sense of style.
Now the cold weather’s well and truly set in, a practical present is a set of warm pyjamas. This top and bottoms are available from River Island. Not only are they stylish – is it just us who could see that top working as a proper day shirt? – but they’ll also help her keep toasty warm, and they’ll only cost you £30 for the set.
If you want to get your wife or girlfriend jewellery but want something a bit more special than the high street, one of the best places to look is Etsy. You can search through thousands of shops to find something you like, but make sure you only go for something from a UK maker, otherwise you might have to pay a lot for postage and your gift might not make it to you in time for Christmas. One piece that we found was this 1920s-style silver Honey Bee necklace from designer The Magpie’s Daughter for £16.80.
For a lady who likes to get in touch with her creative side, this pink Diana F+ camera from Lomography is only £89. It’s great for taking vintage-style photos on film and comes with a flash, so your girl can create some truly artistic looking shots.
Getting your wife or girlfriend something she can eat will probably go down well, but you don’t have to keep this just to the stocking fillers. A food hamper suggests a more extravagant touch, but don’t think that this has to break the bank. Asda currently has a great range of food hampers for Christmas 2014, including this For The Love of Chocolate basket, featuring a selection of sweet treats for £29.99. If your girl is more into savoury food than sweet, this Cheese Cube with apple chutney and savoury biscuits will go down a storm for £19.99.
If you’re looking for a truly special gift that she’ll remember, why not get something that you can both enjoy together throughout 2015? You could buy her a year’s subscription to Netflix, which gives you access to thousands of films and TV shows. Find a new series for you both to love, or schedule in a weekly movie night. At £5.99 a month, it works out at £71.88 a year. However, if the two of you are more outdoorsy, why not consider a joint membership for a year at the National Trust? For £71.62, you and your partner can explore over 300 historical locations across Britain and you’ll also get a Members’ Handbook, so you can decide where you want to go first.
