Everyday capsule wardrobe for men on a budget

Published 11 March 2015 by

With fashion moving so quickly nowadays, it can be expensive to keep up with the latest trends. But instead of running to the shops every time the next must-have item comes out, why not go back to basics and create your very own capsule wardrobe? A capsule wardrobe is based on the idea that with just a few carefully chosen pieces, you can create a stylish, yet interchangeable, wardrobe. To learn more about how to start your very own men’s capsule wardrobe, follow our step-by-step guide.*

The ground work

Before we talk about what items we’ve included, there are a couple of things that we need you to think about first:

1. Choose a colour, any colour – every capsule wardrobe needs to have a theme and the easiest way to go about choosing one is to pick a colour palette to work with. This will help all of the pieces in your wardrobe coordinate and match easily with each other. When doing this, try to go with a colour palette that you naturally gravitate towards, as it’s likely that you’ll already have pieces in your wardrobe in this colour.

2. Use what you already have – once you’ve decided on a colour palette, have a look through your wardrobe and pick out the pieces that would work well with it. This will help you to have an idea of what you already have in your wardrobe, and what you could still potentially buy.

3. Clear out – While you’re rummaging through your wardrobe, you might as well use this opportunity to get rid of some of your old clothes. A capsule wardrobe is all about easy, minimalistic style, so a wardrobe stuffed full of clothing isn’t going to be in keeping with this idea. Once you’ve gone through your wardrobe, take whatever you don’t want to your local charity shop, or sell pieces online if they’re good enough quality.

Capsule wardrobe

Now that you’ve chosen your colour palette and identified what you have in your current wardrobe, we can have a look at the capsule collection itself. The following 10 pieces of budget-friendly clothing are what we think all men should have in their wardrobe:

When deciding on what coat to include in your collection, go for something versatile like this tan anorak from Primark. Yes, that’s right we said anorak! The anorak is no longer something to be scoffed at. In fact, it’s been going through something of a style revival over the last couple of years. You can pick this one up for a cool £21!

A jacket is an essential item in any man’s wardrobe, so why not find one like this black jacket from Primark to include in your collection? A jacket like this is great for wearing all year round and can be layered under a coat in the winter or worn with jeans and a tee in the spring. Not bad for just £9!

Regardless of your build or shape, you can’t really go too far wrong with a slim-legged jean. A dark wash tends to be the most flattering on all body types, so why not try this pair of black stretch jeans from F&F at Tesco? Alternatively, if you prefer the navy look, this pair from F&F are sure to be right up your street!

Although jeans are pretty much universal for every occasion, you always need a good pair of formal trousers to wear in the evening. This pair of camel chinos from Matalan are a great find at only £14, and would look smart paired with a jumper and a shirt.

Speaking of jumpers, this navy panelled jumper from Primark is a basic that every man should have in their wardrobe. You could wear this jumper with jeans and a tee on the weekend, or with a shirt and formal trouser on a night out.

A hoodie is great for keeping you comfortable and this one from F&F at Tesco is a bargain at only £10. Hoodies look their best when layered, so try wearing it with a t-shirt and jacket.

Any man’s wardrobe is incomplete without the addition of a denim shirt and this one from Primark is one of the cheapest we’ve found at only £10. Denim is a timeless fabric that can look effortlessly cool when worn well. This number would look great paired with a jumper or basic tee. For those of you who are feeling brave, you could pair this shirt with dark-wash jeans and embrace the double-denim look!

Basic T-shirts

Basic tees are essential for any wardrobe and picking up a few, in a variety of colours, will help you to change up an outfit instantly. When picking t-shirts for your wardrobe, make sure to choose shades that are in keeping with your colour palette. This crew-neck tee from F&F at Tesco is a useful addition and it’s only £4.50. And, if you pick up two, you can get them on offer for £7!

This pair of all black trainers from Primark are an almost perfect copy of the black high-top pumps from Converse. While the original pair are £47.99, this pair are only £12, which makes them quite the bargain. Pumps like these are great for wearing on the weekends and their matt black finish will make them easy to mix and match.

A good pair of brogues are essential for evenings out and special occasions, so why not pick up this pair of grey ones from F&F at Tesco? In this capsule wardrobe, these brogues would pair up really well with a shirt, jumper, and formal trouser.

We hope that our everyday men’s capsule wardrobe has helped you to see how you can condense yours into just a few affordable pieces. Our collection in total (with the inclusion of three basic tops) adds up to £125.50, which isn’t bad considering you could create up to 15 different looks.
