How to find an affordable wedding dress

Published 13 July 2016 by

The cost of a wedding doesn’t just depend on the wishes of the couple, but their budget as well. Our research* from this year found that the median cost of a UK wedding is £8,000.

No matter what figure you have in mind, the dress is likely to take up a considerable portion of it. If you’re not looking to spend thousands on a wedding dress, there are a number of affordable options available.

To help, we’re going to take you through some of the most affordable high-street picks** and the best ways to buy second hand.

High street – under £200

You don’t have to spend a fortune to find a beautiful dress – and these high-street picks prove it.

Bow back

All eyes will be on you in this oversized bow back dress from ASOS. The dress is chic and sophisticated from the front, but features a fun oversized bow detailing at the back. The dress looks much more expensive than its £105 price tag!

Prom dress

For something a little more dramatic, you could try this maxi prom dress from ASOS. The sateen-look fabric creates a classic feel, alongside the full skirt and square neckline. And the champagne tone brings a fresh twist – not bad for £180.

Lace it up

Prefer something a little less traditional? This lace dress from H&M could be right up your street. The knee length frock comes with beautiful lace detailing and a cut out at the back. It is the perfect canvas to create a really special look – and will cost you no more than £60!

Maxi dress

Go for a minimal style with this bandeau maxi dress from MissGuided. This white strapless dress is ideal for any practical bride – you’d be able to dance all night long in this. At just £95, it’s a bargain.

Dazzle ‘em

If you would prefer something with a little more sparkle, this embellished maxi dress from ASOS could be the one for you. The high neck detailing creates a timeless look while the bead and sequin embellishments add a touch of glamour. Wear an up-do on the day to really show off the design.

At just £110, you’ll keep on budget with this dress.

V neck

Make sure you feel special on your big day in something like this V-neck wedding dress from Debenhams. This beautiful design will flatter most figures with its waist cinching design and soft V-neck detailing. Like what you see? You better be quick as it’s currently reduced to just £69.

Buy second-hand

Remember, there’s no reason why you can’t buy your wedding dress second hand. There are a number of sites that specialise in this including SellMyWeddingDress and Preloved.

It’s worth checking auctioning sites like Gumtree and eBay, to see if there are any dresses that catch your eye. But don’t just rely on looking online – you could also browse the local charity shops in your area. You could find a designer dress for a fraction of the price, and no one’s going to know on the day!
