Insure your gadgets before you go to a festival

Published 18 July 2016 by

You’ve dug your wellies out, you’ve packed your tent – you’re ready for a big festival weekend with your pals. And no doubt you’ll be documenting the event with selfies, camp fun with your mates or catching your favourite artist as they take to the stage.

So the very thought of your phone being stolen or dropped in a muddy puddle is probably the last thing on your mind. And let’s face it, although you can’t stop anything from ever happening to your gadgets, you can protect yourself financially in case it does.

One for the pre-festival checklist

Before you put a single dry welly into a wet and muddy field, it’s worth spending a bit of time looking into insuring your gadgets. That way, at least if something does happen, you don’t have the added inconvenience of forking out for a replacement.

And even better – covering your gadgets may not even cost you anything. Many home insurance policies protect your devices already, as do some bank accounts, so registering them might not even eat into your festival fund. It’s definitely worth checking this out before you get down to see those headline acts.

Why bother insuring your gadgets?

Despite being glued to our phones (a quarter of people check their phone more than 50 times a day!), 73 per cent of people believe they don’t need insurance for their gadgets.

In fact, in the same research carried out by Compare the Market, only a fifth of 18-24 year olds have cover for their mobile phone. So if it was nicked from your tent or stamped on when you’re in the middle of the crowd, you could end up with a fairly hefty bill to add to your post –festival blues on your return home.

And actually, one in 10 of 18-24 year olds have been in that position before, where they’ve had to pay in full to have their phone replaced or fixed after having not taken out insurance. Not ideal after you’ve already forked out for the festival tickets, food, drink and travel.

We’ve got you covered

If you check and find your home insurance or bank account doesn’t already cover you for your gadgets, you may need to take out an individual gadget insurance policy.

The cost of a gadget insurance policy can vary, so make sure you shop around to get the best deal. You can use sites like Comparethemarket.com and MoneySupermarket to compare prices.

Focus on the fun

Festivals in the UK are pretty much guaranteed to bring with them rain – it’s what Britain does best – but let that be only thing putting a dampner on the weekend.

Get your gadgets insured before you go, so you all you need to concentrate on is having an amazing time!
