thinkmoney helps Wayne Rooney raise £1.2 million for charity

The charity is well on the way to meeting its target.
Wayne Rooney’s certainly had a successful start to his testimonial year – he’s announced that his foundation has raised £1.2 million for children’s charities. The Wayne Rooney Foundation, supported by thinkmoney, is fundraising for NSPCC, Claire House Children‘s Hospice, Alder Hey Children‘s Hospital and the Manchester United Foundation.
Last year’s testimonial match between Manchester United and Rooney’s first club Everton helped to raise the cash, but he’s not stopping there. He plans to raise over £5 million for the charities – let’s take a look at how he’s going to do it.
In August 2016, Old Trafford hosted Rooney’s testimonial match. Over 60,000 fans enjoyed the game in the stadium, with millions more watching it streamed live on Facebook on BT Sport. The match was the first ever between Premier League teams to stream live on Facebook, making it a historic event.
thinkmoney helped support the fundraising efforts – and we made a giant mosaic spelling out Rooney’s name, taking over a whole stand at the stadium. And although the game ended in a goalless draw, it was still a great event to promote four amazing causes.
The Alder Hey Children’s Hospital say the money will help provide entertainment for their young patients, so they’ll be less worried about their treatments. The Manchester United Foundation say they’re hoping to change the lives of young people across Greater Manchester.
Claire House Children’s Hospice say they’re planning to develop a specialist team of nurses. And the NSPCC will use the money to promote its Childline service for abuse victims.
What’s still to come?
But that’s not all – Rooney’s planning to raise more money for the charities throughout the year. In fact, he’s hoping to raise over £5 million. And if he does this, he’ll be the first sportsperson to raise this much in his testimonial year.
In 2017, thinkmoney will continue to support the Wayne Rooney Foundation for a host of high-profile events including a concert at Wembley with some of Wayne’s famous musical friends, a golf day with Rory McIlroy and a celebratory gala dinner.
And hopefully, we’ll be able to help Rooney reach his target for the four great charities so they can continue with their inspiring work.
