Now that Halloween is out of the way and bonfire night will soon be a distant memory, there's no escaping from the fact that Christmas is on its way.

You've probably already started to think about gift ideas for your loved ones. But it could be worth waiting to buy, as Black Friday 2017 is coming up.

To make sure you're prepared for the biggest shopping day of the year, we're taking you through when it is and how to get the best deal.

When is Black Friday 2017?

Black Friday is an American shopping day that has recently made its way over to the UK. The sale event always falls the day after Thanksgiving and this year will take place on 24 November.

You don't have to wait for the day though, as some shops launch their deals a few days before and still run them afterwards. You can expect to find discounts on clothes, make-up and even TVs and laptops.

Cyber Monday follows Black Friday on 27 November. This is a separate event that sees online retailers offer big discounts – so it might be worth waiting until then to buy any gadgets.

How can I get the best deal?

Whether you're braving the shops or surfing the web at home, there are a few things to remember to help you get a bargain.

Set a budget

Before you do anything, set yourself a budget of what you can afford to spend. This will help make sure you don't get carried away and only buy what you need to.

Do your research

If you're looking to buy a particular item, make sure to shop around for the best price. It's worth checking prices in the build-up to Black Friday as certain retailers release their deals early.

On the day, use price comparison sites to make sure you're getting the best deal.

Register your online account early

Sign up for online accounts with retailers you might want to shop with. This will help you to get online and make purchases quicker, as your details will already be stored onto the system.

Use cashback apps

Cashback apps and sites can help you make money off your purchases. This is because they make commission on the sale of anything you buy through them and you earn a bit of this back.

Pay with your credit card

By using your credit card to make purchases, you're covered under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. The UK law protects you on any purchases you make on your credit card between the value of £100 and £30,000.

This means that if the item fails to arrive or is faulty when it does, your credit card company should refund you the money.
