What is an Authorised Push Payment (APP) scam?

An APP scam is when a scammer tricks you into sending them money. Unlike other types of fraud where someone might hack your account or steal your card details, an APP scam relies on you being convinced to make the payment yourself. These scams can come through phone calls, emails, texts, or even social media messages.

The scammer might impersonate someone you trust or create a fake scenario that pressures you into making a payment. Examples include:

  • Tricking you into buying goods or services that don’t exist.

  • Impersonating a company, like your bank, to get you to send money to their account.
