I recently had a birthday, and as someone who loves a freebie, I decided to go all out and see exactly how much I could claim without spending a penny.

All I did was download each app, sign up with my email, opt into marketing and add my birthday.

The vouchers started rolling in and over a few days, I ended up with everything from doughnuts and cake to a full burger and even a hot noodle box.

Here’s a full breakdown of the UK birthday freebies I claimed in 2026, what the offer gives you, what I picked, and tips to maximise your freebie haul.

How do UK birthday freebies work?

Most birthday freebies require just a few simple steps:

  • Download the shop’s app

  • Sign up with your email

  • Opt into marketing

  • Add your date of birth

Some rewards are sent a week before your birthday, some on your actual birthday, and the validity varies from 7 days up to 30 days or the full birthday month – so be prepared to sign up in advance if you want to get your hands on them.

When do UK birthday freebies arrive?

Most freebies arrive either on your birthday or at the start of your birthday month.

Once your voucher arrives, there’s a redemption window that varies by store: 7 days (Costa, Lidl), 14 days (Caffè Nero, Chopstix, Burger King), 28 days (Greggs), 30 days (Subway), or the entire birthday month (Krispy Kreme).

Always check your voucher as soon as it lands so you don’t miss out.

Do you need to be a member to get birthday freebies?

Yes. All the freebies I tried require you to create an account or join their loyalty program.

No minimum spend is needed for the birthday treat itself.

Do you need ID to claim birthday freebies?

Most places don’t ask for ID.

Chopstix is the only exception that I found on my adventure - they requested ID when I redeemed my noodle box, so don’t forget to bring something with you or no noodles will be coming your way.

Can you use UK birthday freebies online or in store?

Almost all the freebies I tried had to be redeemed in store. But the Hobbycraft £5 voucher, can be used online.

For example: the Krispy Kreme reward is only redeemable in Krispy Kreme stores, not at supermarket cabinets, petrol stations or services, so you’ll need to find an actual shop to claim it.

Always double-check the app when your reward lands.

Are UK birthday freebies worth it?

Absolutely! With a bit of planning, you can pick up over £30 worth of food and other treats on your birthday without spending a penny (just a few hours of your time walking around the shops!).

It’s a very fun way to make your birthday feel extra special, just by signing up and showing up.

Can first-time app users get extra freebies?

Yes! Some shops give extra perks to first-time app users:

  • Greggs: free hot or iced drink

  • Lidl: free fruit item and bakery item with a £5 spend

  • Chopstix: free veggie spring rolls

Do birthday freebies expire?

Yes. Each place sets its own expiry: some last a week, others two weeks or a month. Always check your app and redeem your reward promptly.

Are there vegan or vegetarian birthday freebies?

Yes, there are a few good options, but it depends on where you go and what’s in stock on the day.

Burger King offers a plant-based Whopper, while Costa and Caffè Nero usually have at least one vegan cake available and they are all included in your birthday freebie voucher.

Greggs and Lidl can also have vegan-friendly options, but these vary by store.

If you have specific dietary requirements, it’s always worth asking staff what’s suitable before you order.

What birthday freebies can I get in the UK in 2026?

Here’s a quick snapshot of all the treats I grabbed, with what you get vs what I actually got:

Greggs

What you get: Sweet treat
What I got: Pink sprinkle doughnut (£1.35)

Greggs gives you one free sweet treat, and you can choose almost anything in the cabinet as long as it’s a single item – doughnuts, muffins, brownies, Belgian buns. I went for a pink sprinkle doughnut, but muffins or brownies are the most expensive at £1.85–£1.90.

The only exclusions I found was the large cream cakes on the bottom shelf.

Vegan options, like glazed ring doughnuts or some fruit muffins, may be available depending on the store.

Always ask staff if you have dietary requirements.

When I got the voucher: On my birthday
Validity: 28 days
Did they ask for ID: No

I was told I could pick anything from the sweet treat case except the bottom shelf which contained the larger bakery items like vanillas.

Krispy Kreme

What you get: Sweet treat
What I got: Original glazed doughnut (£2.90)

You get one original glazed doughnut, unfortunately, you can't swap it for something more chocolately, but they're still so good.

Must be redeemed in store – not in petrol stations, supermarkets, or service stations.

There’s no vegan option, sadly.

When I got the voucher: Start of my birthday month
Validity: Until the end of the month
Did they ask for ID: No

Caffè Nero

What you get: Sweet treat
What I got: Pistachio cake (£4.05)

Choose any cake or sweet treat from the counter. I picked the most expensive item I could find, which was a layered pistachio cake.

Café Nero has a lot of vegan options available that are included in your birthday freebie, like their Plant-Based Apple Crumble & Custard Tart.

Always ask staff if you have dietary requirements.

When I got the voucher: On my birthday
Validity: 14 days
Did they ask for ID: No

Costa Coffee

What you get: Sweet treat
What I got: Orange and raspberry cake (£3.45)

Pick any cake or sweet treat from the cake cabinet. I chose the most expensive slice I could find and it was delicious (free cake is always delicious, though).

Costa usually has at least one vegan cake available too, including a Biscoff cheesecake that I might just have to go and try.

When I got the voucher: On my birthday
Validity: 7 days
Did they ask for ID: No

Subway

What you get: Cookie
What I got: Raspberry cheesecake cookie (£1.19)

You can pick any cookie in store. They’re all the same price so just pick your flavour and enjoy!

They did have a plant-based double chocolate cookie if that's more your vibe too.

When I got the voucher: On my birthday
Validity: 30 days
Did they ask for ID: No

Burger King

What you get: Whopper
What I got: Plant-based Whopper (£5.49)

You get a free Whopper, either beef or plant-based.

I chose the plant-based option, which was slightly more expensive.

You can customise your toppings and take things off the burger but you can't add things on (it's free after all, we can't be too cheeky).

When I got the voucher: On my birthday (must be signed up 7 days before)
Validity: 14 days
Did they ask for ID: No

Lidl

What you get: Bakery treat
What I got: Chocolate cronut (£0.89)

I got the chocolate cronut because it looked so yummy (and I clearly didn't have enough doughnuts in my bag already). But if you can get it, the Cookies and Cream Doughnut (£1.49) is the best way to maximise your freebie.

New app users can also claim a free fruit item and an extra bakery item. To maximise value, I went for large strawberries (£3) and a large sourdough (£1.50).

Vegan options are available (like the apple turnover), just check the ingredients in store as it depends on what's being stocked.

When I got the voucher: On my birthday
Validity: 7 days
Did they ask for ID: No

Chopstix

What you get: Noodle box
What I got: Small box with one topping (£6.49)

Choose your toppings and your base (noodles or rice), they both cost the same because the price is the price you pay for the box.

First-time app sign-ups get free veggie spring rolls too!

Since it's up to you what you put on your base, vegan options are possible and I highly recommend the cauliflour.

When I got the voucher: On my birthday
Validity: 14 days
Did they ask for ID: Yes

Hobbycraft

What you get: £5 voucher
What I got: £5 voucher

This one’s really flexible.

You can spend the £5 on anything in store or online – including sale items.

The voucher arrives straight to your inbox on your birthday, so you don’t need to rush.

I love that it lets you pick exactly what you want and it’s a great way to sneak a mini splurge without spending a penny.

When I got the voucher: On my birthday
Validity: 14 days
Did they ask for ID: No

So there you have it – a birthday full of treats without spending a penny. Go on, treat yourself next year and see how many freebies you can grab. Because birthdays are better when they’re full of cake, doughnuts, and a little bit of freebie magic.

Happy birthday… to you (or your inner freebie lover)!
