Soaring temperatures across the UK can leave you feeling hot and bothered about your energy bill, as the cost of staying cool doesn't always come cheap.

Running fans or aircon units can push up the costs of your bill.

Fortunately, help is at hand for selected customers of energy giant EDF.

The firm is handing thousands of vulnerable households free fans, cooling equipment and bill support this summer under a new £1 million initiative.

What free help is EDF offering during the UK's heatwave?

The energy firm has launched Heatwave Relief Packs to help up to selected vulnerable customers stay safe and comfortable during periods of extreme heat like the high temperatures we're experiencing at the start of July.

Customers who qualify could receive a tailored package containing energy-efficient desk or pedestal fans, handheld or neck fans, thermal blackout curtains, reflective window film, reusable water bottles, cooling towels, and up to £20 in electricity credit or vouchers.

The support is worth up to £100.

Which EDF customers will receive free heatwave help?

EDF says customers set to receive the heatwave support will be identified through a mixture of customer support teams, community organisations, trusted partner referrals and direct engagement with customers.

The scheme is being delivered in partnership with social impact company Charis and energy advice service SHINE London.

Why is EDF offering summer support?

Energy firms often help vulnerable customers during the colder months, but EDF says climate change is making heatwaves more frequent and dangerous.

Joe Souto, Director of Retail at EDF, said vulnerable households can face a summer equivalent of the well-known "heat or eat" dilemma.

He added: "Some vulnerable customers are reluctant to use fans or other cooling appliances because they're worried about the cost.

"Nobody should have to choose between protecting their health and managing their household budget."

Are other energy firms offering heatwave help for customers?

EDF's Heatwave Relief Packs is one of the first large-scale UK energy industry schemes helping vulnerable customers cope with extreme summer heat.

However, if you're struggling with energy costs or have additional support needs, it's worth contacting your energy supplier to see what help they can offer.

You can also try keeping your curtains drawn during the day when the sun is shining through to avoid a greenhouse effect in your home.

Also try placing a bowl of ice in front of a traditional fan, so that it pushes the cooled air through the room.

Check if you can switch to a cheaper fixed energy deal. Fixed tariffs stop your bills rising when the market changes, helping to give peace of mind over bills.

Use a price comparison site such as Uswitch to help you find the best deal. Just check your current deal for any exit fees before going ahead with a move.
