Hotel Chocolat egg sandwiches: Are they worth the hype this Easter?

The viral Hotel Chocolat egg sandwiches have been everywhere this Easter, all over TikTok, Instagram and pretty much every “you need to try this” post.
They’re designed to look like a ‘realistic’ egg sandwich but made entirely from chocolate. Slightly ridiculous, slightly genius and very hard to scroll past without stopping to take a peek.
We saw everyone talking about them, so we had to check them out.
But are they worth the lofty price tag, or is this just another viral moment that looks better than it tastes?
What are the Hotel Chocolat egg sandwiches?
These fancy little creations are novelty Easter chocolates designed to look like a sandwich, complete with chocolate “bread”.

There are a few versions to try, all inspired by classic Hotel Chocolat flavours.
We got our hands on the two most popular:
Chocolate spread egg sandwich, milk chocolate with a praline filling
Caramayo egg sandwich, white chocolate with caramel milk chocolate
They’re £11.95 each, which immediately puts them in the “this is a treat, not a casual pick-up” category in my book.
They also come in packaging that looks like a meal deal sandwich, which is really fun and adds a little whimsy to the whole experience.
And yes, if it’s a straight choice between this and a meal deal sandwich, I’m picking the chocolate every single time. No hesitation.
Why have they gone viral?
It’s pretty simple, they look (sort of) like real sandwiches, which immediately makes people do a double take and they’re basically made for social media. It taps straight into that same hype we’ve seen around things like the iconic Japanese 7/11 sandos and the M&S strawberry sando where it’s all about the aesthetic, the neat layers and that oddly satisfying, almost too-perfect-to-eat look.

What do they taste like?
For something that’s gone this viral, the taste is… good, but not mind-blowing.
I’m guessing it’s not the flavour that made these famous, it’s the look. But you know what they say, you can’t taste a TikTok.
That said, both versions are:
Creamy
Smooth
Not synthetic tasting
They’ve got that proper chocolate flavour you’d expect from a more premium brand, rather than the overly sweet, slightly waxy vibe you sometimes get from cheaper Easter eggs. Yes, Cadbury, I’m looking at you.

If I’m thinking about chocolate I can’t stop eating, I think more along the lines of Ferrero Rocher and for me, these sandwiches aren’t on the same level – but they are nice to snack on or share.
The chocolate spread version is the richer of the two, thanks to the praline it feels a bit more indulgent and slightly more grown-up.
The Caramayo is definitely sweeter and more fun to look at. The mix of white chocolate and caramel milk chocolate gives it more of a dessert-like feel. Softer, sweeter and very easy to keep going back for “just one more bite” but that does mean it gets sickly quickly.
Texture: what makes them different?
You’ve got the classic thin chocolate shell you expect from an Easter egg, but the “bread” layers are much thicker. Hotel Chocolat 3D scanned real wholemeal bread to make authentic moulds for the chocolate bread slices.

So instead of just snapping through a hollow egg, you get a proper chunky bite although I am really disappointed that the egg part isn’t filled and just sits hollow. For almost £12 I would like some ganache in there or maybe a few small truffles.
What are they made of?
If you’re looking a bit closer at what you’re actually getting:
The chocolate spread version uses 50% milk chocolate, with 40% milk chocolate and praline
The Caramayo combines white chocolate with caramel milk chocolate
They contain dairy and depending on the flavour, may include nuts too.
Taste-wise, the quality comes through. It melts properly, feels creamy and doesn’t have that artificial edge you sometimes get with cheaper Easter options.
Do they contain palm oil?
This is something more people are paying attention to at the moment and I’m no exception.
Hotel Chocolat is known for focusing on higher-quality ingredients and from checking the ingredients here, there’s no clear sign of palm oil, which is often used in cheaper chocolate.
With more conversations happening around big chocolate brands and ownership changes, it’s something shoppers are keeping a closer eye on.
These sandwiches taste like a real deal, premium product. Creamy, smooth and not overly processed.
Why are they so expensive?
At £11.95 for 135g, these are firmly in premium territory.
You’re paying for:
The novelty
The design
The packaging
The brand
To be fair, they absolutely deliver on the visual side. They look great, they’re fun and they’re clearly made to be shown off.
But when you break it down by price per gram, especially with shrinkflation still a big topic, they are a bit steep.
Are they worth the money?
This is the big one.
If you’re buying one for yourself, it’s a bit of a toss-up. They are nice, genuinely, but they just edge into that “slightly too expensive for what you get” territory in my book.
You won’t regret trying one but you probably wouldn’t rush to buy another at full price.
As a gift though, they’re sweet – in more ways than one.
They:
Look impressive
Feel a bit different from a standard chocolate egg
Are easy to grab on the high street
And that novelty factor can’t be replicated.
Quick verdict
Taste: good, creamy, proper chocolate
Value: slightly overpriced
Overall: worth trying once, better as a gift
For the same price… what would you rather have?
The egg sandwich weighs 135g and costs £11.95, which is roughly £8.85 per 100g.
For the same £11.95, you could also pick up a full 150g Easter egg, still from Hotel Chocolat, like their 40% Milk Chocolate Easter Egg or 36% White Chocolate Easter Egg. That gives you the classic Easter experience and even more chocolate to get through.

Compare that to the egg sandwich, and it’s clear what you’re paying for. The sandwich is all about the novelty, the clever design, the fun packaging, and that viral “TikTok moment” which, to be fair, it delivers.
Where can you buy them?
You can pick them up:
In Hotel Chocolat stores across the UK high street
Online via the Hotel Chocolat website
They’re easy to find, which makes them a great last-minute Easter pick-up if you've got a shop nearby.
How do they compare to supermarket Easter eggs?
Without a doubt, the Hotel Chocolat egg sandwich sits above your standard supermarket egg in terms of quality. It’s richer, creamier and has that more premium feel you don’t quite get from your typical Cadbury Easter eggs.
But when it comes to value for money, supermarket eggs win by a mile. You could pick up three large Cadbury Dairy Milk Easter Eggs at Tesco, giving you around 570g of chocolate for £10.50 with a Clubcard.

Go for the medium eggs and at £1.25 per egg, you’re looking at up to 810g of chocolate for roughly the same price as one egg sandwich.

Compared to the 135g sandwich, it’s not even close. You’re getting three to six times more chocolate for your money. Supermarket eggs are all about quantity and familiarity, the kind of thing you grab without thinking, easy to throw in the trolley, perfect for kids and exactly what you expect at Easter.
If you’re still after something a bit more premium but want it to feel like a classic Easter egg, there are some really strong middle-ground-but-bougie options.
Take the Tony’s Chocolonely Milk Chocolate Easter Egg. Right now, you can get it for £11 with a Nectar card at Sainsbury’s (usually £13.50), or around £11.50 at Waitrose and £12 at Morrisons with a More Card. Tesco also has the milk caramel version for £10.85 with a Clubcard. For something bigger and more substantial than the sandwich, it’s a solid deal.

Then there’s the Lindt Gold Bunny Milk Chocolate Easter Egg. The cheapest price right now is £14 with a Clubcard at Tesco (usually £16). If you want to spend a bit less, Asda has a smaller 195g version for £11 or if you’re thinking purely about value per gram, there’s a bigger 310g version at Ocado for £16.50 that works out cheapest overall.

These are the kind of options that sit comfortably between value and quality. You’re getting more chocolate than the sandwich and that proper Easter egg feel, without paying purely for the novelty factor.
So, if it’s purely about value, supermarket eggs are the clear winner. The sandwich is more of a one-off treat you buy for the moment, not the amount of chocolate.
How to save money on them
If you do want to try them, there are a few ways to soften the price a bit:
Use code SPRINGEVENT26 for £5 off £35 online (offer valid until 29/03/2026)
Sign up to the Hotel Chocolat loyalty scheme for 15% off
Keep an eye out for any other seasonal offers, it adds up if you’re picking up a couple.
Final verdict: hype or worth it?
The Hotel Chocolat egg sandwiches sit right in the middle for me.
They taste good, they look great and I did genuinely enjoy trying them. But they are a bit pricey for what you get, and I definitely felt that once I’d tried both.
Would I buy them again? Probably not at full price, just because I know what to expect now.
Would I recommend them? Yes, but more as a gift or a one-off Easter treat than something you’d keep going back to.

They’re not about getting loads of chocolate for your money. They’re about trying something a bit different, having a bit of fun with it and maybe convincing yourself that, yes, you would choose this over a meal deal sandwich… at least once.
