Dogs out on dog walk

For many of us, our dogs are beloved family members. But with the cost of living still climbing, dog owners across the UK are facing impossible choices. Some have even been forced to rehome their pets.

The RSPCA says animal abandonment has risen sharply. In winter 2021, they received 3,071 reports of pets left to look after themselves. By winter 2023, that had jumped to 4,630 representing a 51% increase.

Why is this happening?

The RSPCA has identified two main reasons:

  • the pandemic – during lockdown, lots of people adopted pets for companionship, but as life returned to normal many struggled with the responsibility.

  • the increase in living costs – higher food prices, energy bills, and seasonal expenses like Christmas have left many struggling to afford even basic pet care.

For some, it’s a choice between heating their home and feeding themselves or feeding their pet.

How the Dogs Trust can help

If you’re finding it hard to care for your dog, you don’t have to face it alone. The Dogs Trust offers a range of support.

Dog food banks

Some Dogs Trust rehoming centres now run pet food banks to help owners keep their dogs fed. If there isn’t one nearby, the RSPCA’s interactive map can help you find your closest Dogs Trust food bank.

Free behaviour support line

If your dog’s behaviour is becoming hard to deal with, you can get free expert advice instead of paying for expensive training. Call 0303 003 6666 or fill out the Dogs Trust online form, and a behaviour specialist will get in touch.

Affordable vet care advice

Vet bills can be really daunting, especially in emergencies. The Dogs Trust offers guidance on:

  • how to give your dog a basic health check at home

  • low-cost pet insurance options

  • which medications are safe and which to avoid

Their online guides can help you keep your dog healthy without overspending.

Low-cost enrichment ideas

Bored dogs can become stressed or destructive but keeping them entertained doesn’t have to cost much. The Dogs Trust shares creative DIY games and activities using everyday household items.

Support in crisis situations

If you’re facing homelessness or domestic abuse, the charity can help with:

  • finding pet-friendly accommodation

  • safe solutions for you and your dog if you need to leave home quickly

Thinking about rehoming your dog?

If you’re considering giving up your dog, the Dogs Trust can talk you through your options and connect you with the right help, so you can make the best decision for both you and your pet.

Other places to get help

There are other pet charities you can turn to if you’re looking for help. These include:

  • the RSPCA’s cost of living hub – it offers tips, resources, and access to over 200 pet food bank partnerships across the UK

  • local animal charities and shelters – many offer advice, financial help, or access to pet food banks

If you’re struggling, please reach out to a pet charity like the Dogs Trust before making any final decisions. There is support available. Sometimes, just a little help can make the difference between keeping your pet and having to say goodbye.
