Petrol prices rising ahead of summer holidays: How Asda and Sainsbury's fuel offers could save you money

Drivers are being warned that petrol prices could be heading back up - just as families hit the road for the summer holidays.
Wholesale fuel costs have started rising again, as conflict in the Middle East ramps up.
But the good news is that supermarket shoppers can tap into new discounts from Asda, as well as existing deals from Sainsbury's to soften the blow.
Why are petrol prices rising again?
The average UK price of petrol has climbed from a six-week low of 150.7p a litre to 151.0p a litre over the past week, while diesel has edged up from 164.8p to 164.9p a litre after wholesale fuel prices increased from late June into July, according to the AA.
It comes as fighting has broken out again in the Middle East pushing oil prices back up.
There are signs the conflict could intensify and oil prices increase further, as Iran threatens to block trading routes in the region and the US launches fresh strikes.
Since the start of the US-Iran war, petrol and diesel hit highs of 159.0 and 192.4p a litre respectively in April. Petrol then rose to 159.7p in May.
Throughout June into July, fuel prices fell as a ceasefire was hashed out.
But now, these drops could be reversed if fighting continues.
Asda and Sainsbury's fuel offers can help you save on petrol
Asda has launched a new fuel offer that can help you save if you are a shoppers at the supermarket and signed up to its Rewards scheme.
From now until 31 July 2026, members who spend £40 or more in a single in-store grocery transaction will receive a 5p-per-litre fuel coupon.
This can then be redeemed at Asda filling stations until 7 August.
For drivers filling a typical 60-litre family car, the discount could save up to £3 on a single fill-up.
It is the first time customers have been able to unlock fuel savings through the Asda Rewards app, with plans to expand the offer to more locations in the future and introduce additional fuel rewards.
It follows a similar offer from Nectar where shoppers can swap 300 points for 5p off per litre at Sainsbury's and selected Esso petrol stations.
Which supermarket has the cheapest petrol?
When it comes to filling up your motor, the big four supermarket chains, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's, are often among the most affordable options.
However, supermarkets aren't always the cheapest so it's best to check before you fill up/
You could find that a local independent petrol station undercuts the major chains.
Using fuel price comparison apps or checking nearby stations could help you save a few pounds that all add up - try petrolprices.com or myRAC app.
