Money Saving Tips

Fancy bagging a bargain this Christmas? Here at thinkmoney, we poured over Which’s gift guides and compared prices across Amazon and pre-loved platform Vinted to see just how much you could save if you bought your Christmas presents second-hand.

The results were astounding. Here's a quick example – a Nespresso Aeroccino 4 Milk Frother on Amazon costs £119.85, while the same second-hand item on Vinted costs £21.70. Sure, someone’s used it before, but you can save...checks notes...nearly £100!

And if you really don’t want to buy second-hand, sites like Vinted have BNWT ("brand new with tags") filters.

It’ll usually still come with a nice discount, because it's technically pre-owned. Our research showed some sellers knocked 50% off the price, even for unopened stuff in its original packaging.

Why buy pre-loved this Christmas

Did you know more than half of Brits say they’d be happy with second-hand Christmas gifts? That’s according to our research at thinkmoney. We polled around 2,000 people:

  • 54% agreed a pre-loved gift would make them happy this Christmas
  • A whopping 65% of people aged 18-24 said the same

In the words of the Grinch, one man’s toxic sludge is another man’s potpourri. So go get your potpourri and save yourself some cash in the process.

Buying second hand gifts on online marketplaces

Buying second-hand on platforms like Vinted can save you a small fortune. Pick up a pre-loved Aeroccino for mum, a JBL speaker for dad, and a Jellycat keyring for the little one, and you could save around £160.

So, how do you get the best deals? Here are our top tips:

  • Like or save items – sellers often send discounted offers when they know you’re interested.
  • Don’t be afraid to haggle – polite asks are expected, and the worst they can say is no.
  • Bundle up – buying from the same seller can mean extra savings and cheaper shipping.
  • Order early – this isn’t Amazon, so allow time for delivery. Need it fast? Message the seller.
  • Stick to your budget – listings are one-offs, but new ones pop up daily. Don’t let FOMO win.

Now you know how much you can save, head to Vinted, eBay or Facebook Marketplace and start hunting for bargains.
