Tesco has launched a new Clubcard specifically for 16–17 year olds, who have previously not been allowed to join the loyalty scheme.

The teenagers will now be able to access thousands of Clubcard Prices deals and points rewards for the first time.

This makes a real difference to how much young shoppers spend.

How much money does a Clubcard save you?

Thanks to more and more loyalty prices, it is now more important than ever to be signed up to a supermarket loyalty card to save cash.

A price comparison by consumer group Which? recently highlighted the importance of loyalty discounts.

A basket of 234 branded items without a loyalty card were more expensive at both Sainsbury's and Tesco than high-end Waitrose and Ocado.

However, once loyalty discounts were applied Tesco was only beaten by Asda on price, Sainsbury’s was in third place.

The data showed that 140 Tesco items were on Clubcard promotion while 159 Sainsbury’s items were discounted with Nectar.

Why the Tesco new teen Clubcard is a big deal

Previously you had to be 18 or over to sign up for a Tesco Clubcard.

Even if these younger shoppers don't do big family shops, they often buy lunch and other snacks from the supermarket.

Not having a Clubcard meant younger shoppers were missing out on key savings.

Now these teenagers will be able to access cheaper Clubcard prices in store, as well as collect points on everyday spending.

These points can then be turned into money off vouchers.

How to sign up for Tesco Clubcard for 16–17s

Teenagers can’t sign up on their own, they will need to be invited by a parent or guardian.

To sign up your child you'll need to open the Tesco app.

Then tap the profile icon and in account settings select ‘Invite to Clubcard’.

You can then send the sign-up link.

The Clubcard is digital-only and is accessed through the app or website.
