Warm Home Discount extended - households to get £150 off energy bills until 2030

Millions of households across Britain will keep getting money off their energy bills for the rest of the decade. The Government has confirmed that the Warm Home Discount will continue for another five years, and those eligible will receive £150 off their energy bills every winter until 2030/31.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: “Tackling the affordability crisis is the government’s number one priority.
“That is why we are today confirming to millions of eligible families across the country that they will receive the £150 Warm Home Discount every winter for the rest of the decade.
“That will give families much-needed peace of mind that they will continue to receive vital support in the cold winter months, as we take action to bring down bills for good.”
This follows the government’s Warm Homes Plan announcement last week; a £15 billion investment which will help households across the country fund energy-saving measures like solar panels and heat pumps. You can find out if you’re eligible and how to apply in our article on the Warm Homes Plan.
What’s new?
- The £150 Warm Home Discount will continue every winter until 2030/31.
- A small number of households still need to call the helpline by 27 February 2026 if they received a letter asking for more information; this is so they can get their discount if they’re eligible.
- Scotland is getting a big change: 345,000 Scottish households will now get the discount automatically, up from fewer than 100,000. This is an increase of about 250,000 families.
- From April, energy bills will also fall by an average £150 due to separate government measures.
What is the Warm Home Discount?
The Warm Home Discount is a one‑off £150 credit applied to your electricity bill in winter. It’s designed to help people on low incomes or Pension Credit who may struggle with heating costs. It’s not a cash payment; it usually appears as a credit on your bill between October and March.
Who is eligible?
Your eligibility depends on your income, benefits and where you live. In England and Wales, you’ll typically qualify if you get pension credit, or you’re on a low income and receive certain means-tested benefits such as universal credit, housing benefit, or income-related JSA for example.
In Scotland, you’ll typically be eligible if you’re on pension credit or other means-tested benefits. But, you could also get the payment if you’re on a low income and meet your supplier’s criteria. From next winter, most Scottish households who qualify will get the discount automatically.
Do you need to apply?
Most people don’t need to apply for the Warm Home Discount. In England and Wales, 96% of eligible households get paid automatically.
But you should get in touch if:
- you received a letter telling you to call the helpline; you must phone by 27 February 2026
- you think you’re eligible but haven’t had a letter or the £150; in that case, call 0800 030 9322 by 27 February 2026
When will you get £150 off your energy bills?
The £150 Warm Home Discount is usually applied between October and March. So, if you’re eligible, you should be getting £150 off your energy bill soon, if you haven’t already. Prepayment customers normally get a voucher instead of a bill credit.
