Car insurance costs in 2026; why bills could rise again and how to pay less

Car insurance costs in the UK have been on something of a rollercoaster over the last few years, and 2026 is an interesting moment in that journey. The average comprehensive motor insurance premium held steady at £560 in Q1 2026, just £1 more than the previous quarter and £30 lower than the same period in 2025. For drivers who absorbed sharp rises in 2023 and 2024, that modest improvement is genuinely welcome.

The less welcome news is that the costs driving premiums are moving in the wrong direction again. Of the £2.9 billion insurers paid out in claims in the first quarter of 2026, £1.9 billion was for vehicle repairs, up 3% on the previous quarter, and the average accidental damage claim reached £3,699, up 8% in a single quarter. When repair costs rise this sharply, premiums tend to follow, and analysts are warning that the stability of the first half of 2026 may not last through autumn.

The good news is that there is a lot within your control, and some of the most effective steps are also the simplest.

Why are car insurance costs still so high in 2026?

The £560 average covers a huge range of individual premiums, so it is worth understanding what is actually driving the market before thinking about what to do about it. A 17-year-old in a higher insurance group car can pay over £3,000 a year, while a 45-year-old with ten years of no claims in a low-group car might pay under £300. Your age, location, car and claims history all play a significant role.

At the market level, a few structural pressures are keeping costs elevated even as the headline average has eased slightly.

Modern cars are packed with sensors, cameras and driver assistance systems that cost significantly more to repair than older models. A windscreen replacement on a car with these systems can cost three times more than on a basic model, because the cameras need recalibrating once the glass is fitted. Those costs flow through to repair bills and ultimately to what every driver pays at renewal.

The cost of raw materials used in repairs, including paint, has risen by an average of 16% in a year. Vehicle theft is also a growing factor, with relay attacks targeting keyless entry systems pushing up theft-related claims significantly. And the ABI estimates that detected insurance fraud costs the industry over £1 billion a year, a cost that is ultimately shared across all policyholders

How to reduce your car insurance premium in 2026

These are the steps that genuinely move the needle, in order of the impact they tend to have.

Shop around every single year at renewal

This is the big one, and the one most people skip. The FCA banned loyalty pricing in 2022, meaning insurers can no longer offer new customers systematically better deals than existing ones for the same risk profile. But that does not mean your current insurer is offering the most competitive price in the market for your specific circumstances. Different insurers price different drivers differently, and spending ten minutes comparing the whole market at renewal consistently finds lower quotes for most drivers.

Pay annually rather than monthly if you can

Paying monthly is effectively a loan from your insurer, and the interest applied typically adds 20 to 30% to the total annual cost of the policy. On a £560 premium, that is up to £168 a year extra just for spreading the cost. If paying upfront is a stretch, putting the annual premium on a 0% purchase credit card and clearing it over the year costs considerably less than the insurer's own monthly plan.

Try different accurate descriptions of your job

This one surprises a lot of people. How you describe your occupation has a measurable effect on car insurance quotes, and the same role described slightly differently can produce meaningfully different results. There is nothing dishonest about this — your description just needs to be accurate, and some accurate descriptions of the same job attract lower premiums than others. It is worth trying a few variations when you are getting quotes to see what difference it makes.

Protect and build your no claims bonus

Several years of claim-free driving can reduce a premium by 50% or more compared to a driver with no history, making your no claims bonus one of the most valuable assets you have as a driver. If you have an older car and a small dent or scrape, it is worth doing the maths on whether making a claim is actually worthwhile once you factor in the impact on your bonus. Paying for a small repair out of pocket and keeping your discount intact often works out cheaper in the long run.

Consider a telematics policy for younger drivers

For younger drivers facing very high premiums, a telematics or black box policy that tracks driving behaviour through an app can make a significant difference. Safe, low-mileage driving earns lower premiums over time, and for someone who mainly uses the car for short local journeys it can cut the cost considerably compared to a standard policy.

Raise your voluntary excess, but only to a level you can actually afford

A higher voluntary excess reduces your premium because you are agreeing to cover more of any claim yourself. It only saves you money if you could genuinely pay that excess when you needed to make a claim. An excess that looks good on paper but is beyond your actual means is a problem waiting to happen, not a saving.

How to reduce car insurance costs if you are really struggling at renewal

If your renewal quote has come in significantly higher than last year and you are genuinely finding it hard to manage, you are not without options.

Under ABI Premium Finance Principles, insurers have committed to treating customers fairly if they are experiencing financial difficulty. If you contact your insurer and explain your situation, they may be able to discuss a payment arrangement or options to reduce the cost of your cover. It is always worth making that call rather than simply letting a policy lapse, because driving without insurance is a criminal offence with serious consequences including six penalty points, a fine, and the near certainty of even higher premiums when you come to renew in future.

If you are in a higher-risk category and struggling to find affordable cover through comparison sites, speaking to an independent broker can surface options that do not always appear in standard comparison results.

What to watch for when your car insurance renews later in 2026

Repair costs rising 3% in a single quarter is the detail in the Q1 2026 data worth keeping an eye on. Premiums tend to lag repair costs by a quarter or two as insurers absorb increases before passing them on to policyholders. If repair inflation continues at this rate through the summer, renewal quotes in autumn 2026 may be noticeably higher than they are right now.

If your renewal falls in the second half of the year, it is worth getting comparison quotes a few weeks before your renewal date rather than waiting until the day itself. Most insurers allow you to lock in a quote up to 30 days in advance, which means you can secure today's pricing before any market movement between now and your renewal date.
