DWP benefit payment dates are shifting this week because of the August bank holiday on Monday 31 August 2026. If your payment normally lands on a Monday, you will receive it on Friday 28 August instead. The change applies automatically across the whole of the UK and no action is required from claimants.

The timing matters more than usual this month. With back-to-school costs landing at the same time, including uniforms, shoes, stationery and travel, having your payment arrive on Friday rather than Monday gives you the weekend to plan ahead. But if your direct debits, rent or standing orders are set up around your usual Monday date, it is worth checking today that the timing still works.

Which benefits are paid early on Friday 28 August 2026?

The early payment applies to anyone whose usual payment date falls on Monday 31 August. The following benefits are affected:

  • Universal Credit

  • State Pension

  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

  • Attendance Allowance

  • Carer's Allowance

  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

  • Income Support

  • Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)

  • Pension Credit

  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

If your normal payment date falls on any other day of the week, nothing changes and your payment arrives as usual.

What to do if your direct debits are timed around your Monday payment date

Check what goes out of your account around 31 August or the days immediately after. If you have a direct debit, standing order or rent payment scheduled for Monday 31 August or the days following, check whether your early Friday payment will land in time to cover it.

For most people it will, but if there is any doubt, contacting the company the direct debit is for and asking them to take it a few days later this month is usually simple to arrange. Doing it today or tomorrow gives you the most time before the weekend.

What to do if your DWP payment does not arrive on Friday 28 August

If your payment has not appeared by Friday afternoon, check your bank account before calling the DWP, as payments can take a few hours to clear. If it still has not landed by end of day, check your UC online account or award letter to confirm that your usual payment date is indeed Monday 31 August.

If you have confirmed it should have arrived and it has not, call the relevant helpline on Friday before lines close. All DWP helplines operate as normal on Friday 28 August and close for the bank holiday on Monday 31 August, reopening on Tuesday 1 September.

Here are the numbers to have ready:

  • Universal Credit: 0800 328 5644 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm)

  • State Pension and Pension Credit: 0800 731 0469

  • PIP: 0800 121 4433

  • Child Benefit: 0300 200 3100

  • ESA, Income Support and JSA: 0800 169 0310

  • Carer's Allowance: 0800 731 0297

  • Attendance Allowance: 0800 731 0122

A note on back-to-school costs

The DWP noted that the timing of this payment change is intended to help families manage expenses before the new school year, when costs for uniforms, shoes and travel strain household budgets. If you are facing significant back-to-school costs this week, it is worth checking whether your child's school offers a uniform exchange, whether your local council has a school clothing grant available, and whether your child qualifies for free school meals from September if they do not already receive them. Our guide to free school meals in 2026 covers the new eligibility rules in full.
