There's nothing more frustrating than having to step away from your computer in the middle of a box-set binge on Netflix. But you no longer have to stop watching your TV show if your internet connection goes down.
Netflix has updated its app to allow you to download programmes for offline viewing – meaning you can continue to watch on airplanes or other places where you can't use the internet. We explain how to watch Netflix when you're offline.
Download and go
Last November, Netflix announced that customers can now download shows and films for offline viewing – and they won’t have to pay any more for this.
This feature is available on all Netflix plans and you can download the Netflix app for phones and tablets on Android and iOS. Netflix say this move comes after listening to customers say they want to continue watching shows on airplanes or places where there's limited or expensive internet.
You can download shows like Orange is the New Black, Narcos and The Crown from the Netflix app – but not all content is available for offline viewing. For example, certain BBC shows like I'm Alan Partridge and The Office do not feature the download logo.
How to download
To start downloading today, you'll need the Netflix app and to update to its most recent version. You can then start searching for titles and look for the download icon. To only search for downloadable titles, select 'Available for Download' from the Netflix menu.
Once you've found a title, click on the download icon on the description page – you can download it in standard or high quality depending on the amount of space you have on your device. You can access the download once it's complete from the 'My Downloads' section of the app.
You can then watch this programme using your device without internet connection. However, there's usually a time limit on how long you can keep this download for.
What about Amazon Prime?
You can download Amazon Video programmes to Fire tablets, Fire phones, iOS devices and Android phones and tablets.
Just like with Netflix, there will be a time limit of how long you have to view a downloaded video while your device is offline. This can vary per title though. A notification will show up onscreen to let you know if the viewing period is over for a downloaded video.
If you connect to internet, you can continue to watch the video.
Can you watch TV offline?
You can download programmes to watch offline with BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub and All 4 by using the relevant app or download software. You cannot download shows from My5.
You'll need an internet connection to download the programme and then you can watch it offline. The time limit for watching a TV show can vary from provider – so check before you download.
Keep in mind that you must have a TV Licence to download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer. Find out when you don't need a TV licence in our blog.
