Why is my money held when a transaction has failed?

When you go to make a payment, companies will authorise your card before they actually debit your bank account.

If a payment fails, the authorisation will have already been taken off the balance, but the payment won’t actually be taken.

The funds will automatically go back onto the card, but it may not be immediate.
