What's a Faster Payment?

A Faster Payment is an electronic transfer, which was introduced to speed up sending money within the UK.

You can send and receive Faster Payments using your thinkmoney account.

How do I get Faster Payments paid into my account?

To receive a Faster Payment, you need to give the person sending you the payment your account number and your sort code.

You’ll find these details on your card, your online banking account, the app, and on your statements.

How do I use Faster Payments for sending money within the UK?

You can transfer money to new people, existing payees and companies on online banking or the app.

  • Go to the ‘transfer money’ section.
  • Press ‘send money’.
  • Select which payee you’d like to pay, or use the plus icon to add a new payee - If you’re paying someone new, you’ll need their account number and sort code.
  • Enter the amount and the payment reference.
  • Double check all the details are correct and press confirm.

What you'll need:

  • The account number and sort code of the person/company you want to pay.
  • A reference so the recipient knows what the payment is for (if you're paying a company, they will usually provide the reference).

How long do Faster Payments take?

Faster Payments in and out of your account are normally completed within two hours (and in many cases, within minutes).

In some circumstances, they can take up to the end of the next working day. Faster Payments will always reach your/the recipient’s account by the end of the following business day.

How do I reclaim a Faster Payment sent to the wrong person?

Take care to enter all the correct details because Faster Payments can't be stopped once you’ve sent them.

If you’ve made a payment in error or sent it to the wrong person, call us as soon as possible on 0161 779 5000 and we can discuss the situation.

If you make a genuine mistake when sending an electronic payment – whether online, on your mobile, or using telephone banking – we’ll attempt to recover the funds on your behalf.
